The Goodwill Project
For those who follow this humble blog, it is time we shared a little about where we are from.
The CreativWasabi base is in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
The city itself is a lovely sea-side city which can be best personified as a laid back area with the potential for great economic growth.
There is one thing which mars the beauty of the city and that is its citizens.
For a good while we have come to the realisation of a few things and, while we hope that this post is viewed with an open mind, we are certain that very many people will consider it offensive for the mere fact that it is in our nature to choose not to see the faults which we need to rectify.
The fact is that Port Elizabeth’s residents are plagued by an air of depression, apathy and self-centeredness. There is also a lack of morality and utter disregard for people who are not part of a given group. This in turn informs the way they conduct business and also results in the lack of ‘vibe’ which is so apparent in so many other cities.
While economically the city is based in a province which is by and far the poorest of the country, it is our firm belief that the people in this sea-side city can change things.
The problem is, you can’t help yourselves and each other when all that you wish to do is the very least to skate by on life.
Which is a sad state of affairs when you consider the amount of talent in Port Elizabeth and the pockets of energy of certain individuals who attempt to make a difference in the place. On the rare occassions that cultural events are held these are a huge success yet the frequency with which these are presented are few and far between. Again, the reason for this is because Port Elizabeth is often over-looked as a destination for any events or for any holidaymakers. The irony is when events are held here, people not of this city are surprised at how much energy gathers and how successful the event or the atmosphere can be.
And then it dissipates and the people fall back into their respective dark holes, hurting each other and fighting as if the scraps are worth more than the whole pie which they deserve.
The people of the city needs to be injected with an appreciation of life and an energy which helps them see past their own particular issues. Those of us fortunate enough to be able to travel beyond the cityscape have experienced the sense of energy and ‘life loving’ which is lacking in Port Elizabeth. For those who have been blessed with intelligence have been able to determine what creates this in other places and it is with this that we have envisioned “The Goodwill Project”.
The concept is simple enough:
Create the sense of togetherness and happiness which people experience at a concert, an event, or some other space by providing them with random acts of free and creative kindness.
The actual implementation of the concept is not that simple because we are talking about changing the majority of the city’s inhabitants. And to change people is not an easy task.
As the days progress into weeks and the weeks into months, we will be documenting the start of the project and each of its successes and failures. We cannot determine how long it will take to achieve momentum but we are hopeful that within this calendar year we shall achieve even a modicum of success.
For those interested in knowing how we will be going about this are free to email us or to comment on this blog.
Let’s get started.
